Outdoor Patio Design Ideas and Tips

As temperatures rise, our thoughts turn to outdoor living. Blooming flowers and the smell of backyard barbecues lure us out onto the porch or patio with friends and family. An outdoor patio is more than just a place to eat and relax outside. It is an extension of your house or indoors. It should therefore add beauty to the outdoor space. The outdoor patio is a complement to your design along with the additional dining, seating areas and providing entertainment! They are the outdoor living spaces. Learn how to create your ideal outdoor living space with these ideas and tips below!

1. Trellis and Pergolas

Preferring the shade to the sun doesn’t mean you have to stay inside. Lush pergolas and sculptural trellises aren’t just for looks—they provide relief from harsh rays while still allowing for a cooling breeze to pass through. A simple pergola can help add structure to an outdoor space and make it feel more like a room and  making outdoor dining areas feel more intimate.

2. Fireplace

Outdoor fireplaces bring comfort and warmth to your deck or patio, allowing you to use the space in cooler weather and after dark. Whether made of stone, brick, or other material, these structures also form a dramatic focal point. Give your backyard a sophisticated update and a cozy glow with these outdoor fireplace ideas.

3. Wooden furnitures

Wood has its natural beauty and they are great in providing a sturdy framework for tables, chairs, benches and other furnishings. However do bear in mind when you are choosing outdoor furnitures, hardwoods should be the right choice as they are much heartier, resist weather damage and can last decades if treated properly. There are many different types of hardwoods but some of the more common ones are teak, eucalyptus, white oak.

4. Flowers

No matter where you live, you want to make the most of the good weather days. Why not adding some flowers to your patio to beautify and add color to this space. Since many plants with flowers attract tons of pollinators, you’ll enjoy watching butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds flit about while you drink your morning coffee or sip your iced tea.

5. Wooden Slats Patio Wall

Not every patio offers a panoramic view. When you’re enjoying your summer days and nights, you don’t want to look at bare or cracked walls. A great idea to cover your patio wall is to use wooden slats. Wooden slats are hype in today’s architecture. But their timeless look also makes them a good alternative for the facades of older houses.

6. Side Tables

Side tables are among the most versatile pieces of furniture commonly found in residences, so versatile in fact that there’s a whole range of them designed for outdoor areas. You can take them out on the deck, the patio, under the backyard pergola or by the pool and use them in combination with all sorts of other furniture pieces like outdoor beds, sofas, benches, lounge chairs and so on.

7. Desert Inspired Landscape

All forms of cactus can be used to creat the desert look. Plant small cactus in pots around your patio, or a rockery, and use large variations to fill in the corners of your patio. To complete the look, considering using light sandy colors for funitures and accessories.

8. Potted Plants

With container gardening, you can place and beautify your patio in even more creative ways. You can place them on the furnitures, hang them on the wall and for the larger potted plants, they can help to soften corners, defining the outdoor space and bringing life into featureless areas.

9. Candles and Lanterns

Candles are great in enhancing the ambience of the patio especially in the night. Adding a lantern is a beautiful and cost-effective way to lighten up an outdoor space. Simple black metal ones look great grouped together on a pathway or on their own as a table centerpiece.
